Professional & Discreet Adult Circumcision in Singapore

Most men considering circumcision as an adult have the same worries: will it hurt, how much time off will it take, and what happens during the procedure. Dr Edwin Ong at RMDY Clinic in Katong talks through each of these at consultation, before any decision is made. Adult circumcision at RMDY is a same-day procedure using the Shang Ring method, done under local anaesthesia with minimal bleeding.

What Is Adult Circumcision?

Circumcision is a surgical procedure to remove the foreskin of the penis. It is a centuries-old religious tradition that is practised to this day. Medically, it is performed as a recommended form of treatment for certain conditions. These days, many men choose to undergo the procedure simply for better hygiene.

When Is Circumcision Medically Recommended?

You may be advised to consider circumcision surgery if you experience any of the following:

  • Phimosis (a tight foreskin that cannot be fully retracted)

  • Paraphimosis (a retracted foreskin that becomes stuck and cannot be repositioned)

  • Recurrent balanitis (inflammation of the foreskin and head of the penis)

Ongoing hygiene difficulties linked to the foreskin can also make circumcision a suitable option.

Benefits of Circumcision

Many men find circumcision brings a number of practical benefits:

  • Easier to maintain personal hygiene

  • Reduces risk of balanitis

  • Reduces risk of urinary tract infection

  • Eliminates phimosis and reduces risk of paraphimosis

  • Reduces risk of transmission of certain sexually transmitted infections, including HIV,HPV and Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)

  • Reduces risk of penile cancer

Beyond medical indications, circumcision surgery can also be performed for aesthetic reasons. Men who experience premature ejaculation can also benefit from circumcision as it may help them last longer during sex, though results vary from person to person.

If recurring discomfort, hygiene concerns or a medical condition has brought you here, circumcision may be worth discussing at a Singapore clinic near you. Book a consultation with Dr Edwin Ong at RMDY Clinic.

Circumcision Methods Explained

There are several methods used to perform circumcision surgery, including:

  • Conventional surgical excision, which involves removing the foreskin using a scalpel and closing the wound with sutures.

  • Laser or diathermy, which uses heat energy to cut and seal tissue simultaneously, reducing bleeding.

  • Stapler device, which uses a circular clamp to remove the foreskin and staple the edges in a single motion.

  • Shang Ring, which is a clamp-based method.

Each approach has its own characteristics, and your doctor can help you understand which may suit your situation.

The Shang Ring Method (Used at RMDY)

At RMDY, we perform circumcision using the Shang Ring procedure. Here’s how it typically goes:

  1. Under local anaesthesia, the Shang Ring, which consists of an inner and outer ring, is placed in position and acts as a clamp against the skin.

  2. The foreskin is then cut using surgical scissors.

  3. The ring is left in place for 10 to 14 days.

  4. You’ll return for a follow-up appointment and the ring is removed.

The Shang Ring circumcision is considered by medical professionals to be one of the safer methods available as it requires no sutures and involves minimal bleeding.

In terms of outcomes, patients generally report low complication rates, good cosmetic results, and high satisfaction, though individual experiences may vary.

The frenulum (the small band of sensitive tissue on the underside of the penis) is preserved during the procedure, which matters to men who are concerned about changes to sensation after circumcision.

The Procedure: What to Expect

  1. Before: Numbing cream is applied to the area for at least 30 minutes. No injection is required. The procedure only begins once the skin is fully numb.

  2. During: The procedure itself takes around 10 to 15 minutes.

  3. After: Most patients are able to walk, drive, take public transport, shower and urinate normally on the same day.

Recovery & Aftercare

Full recovery generally takes around four to six weeks. Most patients are advised to wait until this point before resuming exercise, sexual intercourse and masturbation.

As with any procedure, recovery timelines can vary between individuals. Most men find the recovery period straightforward and are back to their usual routine within a few days.
